CAHL - U11

U11 Hockey Introduction
U11 hockey (Birth years 2016, 2017) is an important step in a young hockey player’s journey in Alberta. At this level, players are moving from introductory hockey into more structured team play and skill development. U11 is an exciting next step in a player’s development, where skills continue to grow and the game becomes more structured and competitive. At this level, our teams enter into Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) programming, which introduces league play and regular weekend competition.

What to Expect

Families can expect a consistent and balanced weekly schedule:

  • 2 practices per week at Oilfields Regional Arena

  • 1 home game on the weekend

  • 1 away game on the weekend

  • Team Development to support player and goalie development opportunities

  • Additional Goalie Training provided by association

As part of Central Alberta Hockey League (CAHL) programming, away games do include travel. Most games are scheduled within approximately two hours of Diamond Valley. Travel distance is determined through the tiering process, which considers geography whenever possible; however, depending on final tier placement, there may occasionally be games scheduled outside of this range.

Games are generally played on Saturdays or Sundays, with occasional adjustments based on overall league scheduling.

Skill Development First

The primary emphasis remains on:

  • Advanced skating fundamentals (edges, stride efficiency, transitions)

  • Puck control, passing, and shooting mechanics

  • Small-area games to build decision-making and confidence

Practices are structured to maximize puck touches, movement, and skill repetition.

Introduction to Team Play

U11 marks the transition to:

  • Full-ice hockey

  • Formal game structure and scorekeeping

  • Learning positioning, line changes, and team systems

Players begin developing game awareness while still prioritizing learning over results.

Fair & Positive Competition

At this stage:

  • All players receive meaningful opportunities in practices and games

  • Coaches focus on development, effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship

  • Competition is introduced in a healthy, supportive way

  • Players should have basic skating ability before entering the U11 program so they can safely participate and continue developing their hockey skills.

U11 is a pivotal year where players gain confidence, build strong foundational skills, and develop a deeper understanding of the game — all while continuing to foster a love for hockey.
