U9’S INTRO TO HOCKEY

The U9 program (Birth years 2018, 2019) follows the development principles set out by Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada, focusing on creating a fun, positive, and development-focused environment for young players. At this stage, the emphasis is on building fundamental hockey skills such as skating, puck control, passing, and shooting, while encouraging teamwork and confidence.

Games are worked up to a full ice format, allowing players to try different positions, more involvement in the play, and greater opportunities to develop their skills.

The goal of U9 hockey is simple: develop skills, build confidence, and most importantly, have fun playing the game. 🏒

What Families Can Expect

  • 2 Practices per week and 1 or 2 games on the weekend

  • Games at Oilfields arena or in Okotoks

  • Development-focused practices

  • Emphasis on teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship

  • Optional additional tournaments (team-funded and within guidelines)

Team Formation

In September, players participate in placement skates to help coordinators create our teams that support development and enjoyment for all players.

There are no schedule requests; players are assigned to a team based on skill levels.

A youth hockey team in blue uniforms on ice rink with three adult coaches, some team members kneeling and others standing, in front of an audience behind protective glass.
Kids playing ice hockey on an indoor rink, wearing jerseys and helmets, competing for the puck.
Young hockey players in blue jerseys and striped socks on an ice rink, standing in a line with a trophy in front of them.
